Another bilateral agreement

Time:2013-4-26 Hits:4859

After reviewing the Costa Rican Organic Agriculture Regulation Decree No. 29782, on 28 March 2013, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) determined that organic agricultural products of plant origin that are produced and processed in Costa Rica are deemed equivalent to those produced and processed in accordance with the Canadian Organic Products Regulations, 2009 (OPR 2009).

In consequence, these Costa Rican products may be sold, labeled or represented in Canada as organic, and may display the Canadian organic logo as well as Costa Rica’s organic seal.

At the same time, the National Phytosanitary Service(SFE) from Costa Rica determined the similar terms of acceptance for Canadian products certified to the Organic Products Regulations, 2009 (OPR 2009).

The arrangement allows the import and export of certified organic products between Canada and Costa Rica without the need for additional certification.

However, Canada only admits products of plant origin, while Costa Rica accepts ‘organic agricultural products’ in general.
